New Surry Theatre Presents
Documentary Filmmaking
Ten weeks every Thursday 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM — Individual additional time is expected from each student.
Enrollment: Maximum 10
In this age of information technology and familiarity with global issues, the documentary is an increasingly popular form of storytelling. This workshop concentrates on defining and developing each student's potential as a documentary filmmaker. Students will work in teams (mastering state of the art, digital equipment) producing a short, manageable, documentary project using NST archives of video, pictures and newspaper articles, which they will scan, shoot and edit digitally for screening and review by the class. They will interview Bill Raiten and film his stories of past productions. The Goal of the class is to make four short documentaries for the New Surry Theatre in its celebration of its 40-year anniversary. Each documentary will be different and suited for the NST’s three major productions this anniversary year and shown before each performance. The fourth documentary will be an overall of the history of the NST. The three major productions are:
- Steel Magnolias
- Man of La Mancha
- Oliver
No prior filmmaking experience needed.
GSA Alumnus Dylan Howard has continued to pursue his goals in the film industry. From Blue Hill to Universal Studios in LA and San Francisco, he has been shadowing filmmakers and helping to put on film festivals in the West such as the 48-Hour Film Project. He’s made a series of documentaries about the history of towns along the Union River watershed and has co-founded the production company “Image Gazer Productions” at 2 State St., Ellsworth, ME — “a collective of visual artists who provide professional services and exhibit our work in photography, graphic/web design, film/video production & editing and has youth mentoring programs in the arts.” This summer Dylan will be directing the Third Annual Image Gazer Film Festival bringing some of the West to Down East Maine. In the past years he has earned much success as winner and finalist of the Huey Film Festivals in Waterville, ME, and as State Champion of Skills USA TV/Video Production. This is Dylan’s second year teaching at the New Surry Theatre Performing Arts School.
